Dear Owners,
According to the latest update on the drought situation by the Junta de Andalucía, the Western Costa del Sol has moved from a state of severe scarcity to moderate scarcity, placing it in a pre-alert situation and allowing an increase in the water allocation up to 225 liters per inhabitant per day considering the total resources. Regarding other measures, the use of unconventional resources such as water from desalination and regenerated water will be maximized.
This region, it includes the following municipalities: Torremolinos, Mijas, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Marbella, Estepona, Manilva, Ojén, Istán, Benahavís, and Casares.
It is the municipalities that will now have to issue their municipal decrees, in accordance with what has been established by the Junta de Andalucía. They can be stricter but not more lenient. See bellow translation of a quote from the Official Bulletin issued by the Junta de Andalucia:
“c) For the purposes of complying with the proposed exploitation, the use of unconventional resources such as water from desalination and regenerated water will be maximized. In the latter case, and once concessional rights have been satisfied, resources that have not been used may be employed, always with the corresponding administrative authorization*, in other uses such as garden irrigation.”
*this refers to the local townhalls
In summary, it is great news that the Junta de Andalucia finally announced their permission for easing the water restrictions as the water resources have improved but currently we need to wait for the local townhall to issue their own decreet with regards to lifting or changing the current restrictions. The main water supply company has also announces that they will continue to review and control the consumption to ensure it conforms to the 225 liters per inhabitant per day limit set by the Official Bulletin; therefore, they urge responsible consumption as they must continue to preserve their water resources. Moreover, if this measure is not complied with, further restrictions may be imposed.
We will keep you posted with any further news.
Kind regards,
